About Dan Kirkland
Dan's Background and Training
Before Your First Visit
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Counseling and Psychology and a Master of Science in
Counseling from Texas A&M - Commerce, Texas. For over 25 years I have worked with clients
of all ages in social services agencies, treatment centers, and hospitals.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor. This means that I have completed a
Masters degree in counseling, practicums, internships, and 3,000 hours of supervised practice in
counseling. I passed the Texas State Board of Examiners of Licensed Professional Counselors
examination in 1993. Since then, I have enjoyed over 600 hours of continuing education courses,
and many thousands of hours of counseling experience. The LPC Board has authorized me to
supervise interns who seek licensure as a professional counselor.
I enjoy working with adults individually or in couple's therapy. I see life as a growth process and
therapy as a means to help facilitate that growth. Couples enjoy our therapy together and often
tell me they appreciate being accepted as they are and understood.
I have also provided a page that includes my training, affiliations
and education, should you desire additional information on my background.
Dan's Experience Working with People
Before full time private practice I worked for a large non-profit organization in Dallas. I was
responsible for creating, developing, and administrating the largest grant funded public school
focus group initiative in the state of Texas. I also developed and supervised a team of trained
clinicians to provide home-based counseling to over 2,000 children each year.
I has also worked in managed care reviewing treatment plans, symptoms, diagnoses, and
medications of hospitalized psychiatric patients. My experience also includes work in major
psychiatric facilities where I developed comprehensive family systems programs for child and
adolescent psychiatric day patients, and administrated a multifaceted educational and therapeutic
program for mentally ill adolescents and their families. I also developed and implemented
therapy, training, and educational groups.
I am a writer, and have written over 30 published articles, produced, and hosted, "Something to
Think About with Dan Kirkland," a five minute public service radio spot that aired three times
daily six days per week, for two years on a local radio station.
I enjoy writing short fiction, being active in nature, hunting, fishing, motorcycling, and reading
books related to the human spirit.
